ST. PAUL, Minnesota –MacQueen Equipment celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the long-running Bill Garber Triathlon by raising $25,000—the most money ever raised by a single triathlon—for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. This year, the event returned to its home state of Minnesota.
This unofficial annual “triathlon” brings together leadership from Elgin and Vactor sister dealerships across North America. The event was conceived by former MacQueen CEO Bill Garber.
“Bill Garber believed in inclusivity, getting everyone together to talk. This year we had over 60 men and women from all over the U.S. and Canada, together, sharing stories about work and family. In the end everyone went home with new friends and an appreciation for how fortunate we all are,” said former MacQueen Equipment CEO Curt Steffen.
This year, competitive triathlon events included golf, bocce ball and Hammer-Schalagen—a Minnesota lumberjack tradition that involves hammering nails into the face of a large stump.
“It’s about the camaraderie. It’s about sharing ideas and getting to know each other,” says MacQueen CEO Dan Gage.
The host dealership choses the charity, and MacQueen Equipment selected the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund in honor of Garber, who died from the disease in 2011. Gage said many participants chose to donate their triathlon winnings back to the cause. This year they raised additional funds by raffling off commemorative cornhole boards, signed by triathlon participants.
Gage says the record amount is a fitting way to celebrate the Bill Garber Triathlon’s 25-year legacy. “Bill would go the extra mile to help another dealer or another person. He was looked at as a mentor to a lot of people. We’re trying to carry on what he started.”
